Of Thirst Importance-keeping hydrated, keeping healthy
It is a well known fact that we need water to survive
and most people who are able to have some water daily. What many
may not realise is that a significant amount of the population may
be dehydrated without even realising it.
The Expert Group on Hydration commissioned a survey that found
that 62% of people are not drinking the recommended amount of water
and putting themselves and their bodies through unnecessary
discomfort. Doctor Stillman of the Expert group noted that "Being
thirsty is a sign that you are already getting dehydrated-no one
should wait that long."
The oft-used mantra of "drink at least 2 litres of water a day"
is also grounded in scientific fact and is a sensible policy to
follow with regard to water intake. The group"s nutritionist Dr
Juliet Gray recommends that water is not the only fluid that we can
drink to maintain a healthy hydration level. Gray remarked that "It
is important to remember that all kinds of drinks, including
bottled water, squash, fruit juices or tea and coffee can help
people reach their daily amount."
So to help stay healthy and hydrated we should all remember to
be pro active about our drinking. Why wait to get thirsty?
