With the thirty-first race due to take place this weekend, more than 30,000 runners are expected to join in and run the world famous route around the River Thames.

The event holds a long standing reputation for raising huge amounts of charitable donations to an extremely wide range of organisations, and is claimed to be the biggest annual fundraising event on the planet. In 2007 alone the marathon raised a record breaking £46.5 million. Not to mention the £400 million plus that has been raised for charity by London Marathon runners since the race began.

The marathon is predominantly an athletic event inviting the world's Olympic champions to compete for the prestigious winning title. However, the event is open to participants of all levels and attracts hundreds of fun runners each year, many of which race in fancy dress and attempt to break world records while enduring the 26 mile run, all in the name of charity!

Each year the marathon attracts thousands of spectators, cheering on and supporting the participants to create an electric atmosphere in the city air. It is often these supporters who are inspired to run the race and set out on a new goal of healthy living. This is great as running or jogging has been claimed to be one of the best forms of aerobic exercise to maintain your health levels. The benefits include stress relief, decreasing the risk of heart attacks and even reducing your chances of cancer!

Medicash are dedicated in promoting such a healthy lifestyle and the Active health cash plan now offers discounted membership to over 2,500 gyms across the UK as well as cash back on a wide range of complementary alternative therapies including physiotherapy and acupuncture. So there has never been a better time to join up and reap the benefits of a cash plan.

So what are you waiting for? Don those running shoes and get on your way to raising money and dramatically improving your own health today.
