Founded in the charity hospitals of Liverpool in 1871, Medicash have across its 152-year history become both the UK’s oldest and largest corporate health cash plan provider. This month, the company has announced that it has reached its half million policyholder milestone, marking rapid and significant growth in the past few years.

With 2022 representing the company’s fastest growing year on record with a new policy sold on average every two minutes, this latest milestone sees Medicash’s customer base more than double in less than five years. This growth comes alongside both national industry recognition, with the Liverpool-based provider collecting accolades including National Insurer of the Year and Best UK Healthcare Plan Provider in the first few months of 2023.

To mark this historic milestone, the company’s charitable arm the Medicash Foundation is embarking on a massive £2.1 million project to support NHS hospitals and facilities across the North West over the course of the next four years.

The first hospital to receive funding as part of Medicash’s latest charity undertaking is the newly established Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. Built in 2020 at the heart of the city’s unofficial Knowledge Quarter, the Centre offers state-of-the-art cancer treatment for patients across Merseyside and Cheshire. As part of Medicash’s four-year project, the Foundation has announced that through a partnership with Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, it will be helping to fund a new post for a Trainee Research Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) to support the Centre’s cutting-edge clinical trials and research.

The postholder will play a vital role in the Centre’s research and development team, facilitating the delivery of revolutionary new cancer treatments to bolster the fight against cancer.

“The phenomenal growth that Medicash has seen in recent years is the direct result of just how much we value good health and wellbeing in the modern world,” says Sue Weir, Chief Executive of Medicash and Medicash Foundation Trustee. “Our goal is to provide as many people as possible with easy, affordable access to the healthcare they and their families need, and I’m proud to know that this ethos has helped us to reach this incredible milestone. This same ethos is at the heart of this project, and I’m overjoyed to have the support of our policyholders and wider community in helping to fund our NHS’ vital services.”

Emma Whitby, Head of Research Nursing at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “As a research nurse, our job is all about the holistic care that we can offer our patients – being able to adapt to their needs while providing cutting-edge treatment.

“The funding that Medicash are providing for our new Trainee Research ANP equips our team with even more advanced skills, enabling our patients to be seen by a highly qualified healthcare practitioner that can speed up their treatment process and get them home quicker. This donation is invaluable in improving our patients’ experience and it’s a really exciting opportunity for all the team here.”

By kicking off their latest funding project in their Liverpool home, Medicash give a nod to the company’s history. In 2017, Medicash was honoured with the Freedom of the City of Liverpool in recognition of its longstanding contribution to healthcare and commitment to charitable giving since 1871.

“This new position at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is just the beginning of the project,” says Sue Weir. “We’re looking forward to working with more hospitals across the North West over the coming months to fund even more new positions, and I’m excited to see the incredible impact they’ll have within both their local communities and further afield.”
